This course provides participants with a comprehensive introduction to electronic location devices and messaging systems used in Search and Rescue (SAR) operations. Participants will become familiar with a wide range of tools, including personal locator beacons (PLBs), emergency position-indicating radio beacons (EPIRBs), emergency locator transmitters (ELTs), and commercially available satellite messenger systems like Garmin inReach and SPOT. Understanding the capabilities, limitations, and applications of these devices is crucial for effective SAR planning and execution.
Participants will also develop foundational skills in interpreting beacon data, learning how to analyse transmitted signals to enhance search strategies, optimize resource deployment, and improve mission outcomes. Practical exercises and real-world case studies will reinforce how to integrate data interpretation into operational decision-making, ensuring more accurate and efficient search efforts.
The course covers best practices for deploying and managing beacon technology, including critical operational protocols for both traditional and satellite-based systems. By the end of the training, participants will have the knowledge and skills necessary to use these technologies effectively, reducing response times and increasing the likelihood of successful rescues.
This training is designed for SAR planners, field operators, and technical support teams, providing the tools needed to strengthen technical expertise and enhance decision-making in beacon-aided search operations.
