In February 2025, a German trail runner went missing in mountainous terrain in Greece under harsh winter conditions. Rescue International was contacted to support the family and contribute directly to the ongoing search efforts.
Our team provided decision-support inputs through analysis of key technical areas, including network forensics, terrain-based search planning, and SAR tactics. Imagery was also acquired and thoroughly examined by specialists and with AI-based tools to identify relevant search indicators.
Our assessments helped shape and refine the search strategy, ensuring that efforts remained focused, structured, and aligned with the evolving operational picture. The runner was later located deceased in one of the designated sectors that had been assigned to a volunteer search team.
While the outcome was deeply saddening, the case demonstrates the value of integrating technical analysis and strategic planning into ground SAR operations—particularly in complex environments where precision and coordination are vital.
